Sunlight and photosynthesis are vital to plant growth and development.  Some herbicides can adversely affect light-related biochemical processes, thereby causing damage to plants. There are four mechanisms by which this occurs:

  • herbicides that inhibit or block synthesis of Protoporphyrin IX (PPO)
  • herbicides that inhibit synthesis of carotenoids (pigments)
  • herbicides that block Photosystem II electron transfer
  • herbicides that divert electrons from Photosystem I.

All of these herbicide classes cause cellular damage in the presence of light. This chapter will focus on the first two and the next chapter will address the ones that interfere directly with the photosystems in chloroplasts.
