Issue Summary

Explain what the problem is and why it is a problem.

Add a graphic or media to add emphasis to the issue.

Consider what type of problem is it? For example, is this primarily an issue related to unequal access to information, is this an issue related to the authority of information, is this an issue of misinformation/disinformation?What is the harm that is caused? How does this contribute to or perpetuate some type of inequality or disenfranchisement? What are the implications for individuals, groups, and society?

You should include a detailed description (4-6 sentences) in which they clearly identify the problem and explains what type of problem it is (information access, dissemination, etc).

An explanation of the impact of the problem, how it in some way impacts individuals in a way that causes harm or prevents them from being able to engage as an active and informed citizen

Add context for your stakeholders. Consider these questions. What are the forces or “powers” that are contributing to the problem?  Who does the problem impact? What types of individuals or groups are affected by this issue? Why is this person/group a stakeholder? Clearly explain how this group or individual is impacted by or impacts this issue.   Who should be or already is involved in the conversation on this topic?   Who has the power to effect change related to this problem.   

You should identify between 2 and 4 individuals or groups who would be considered stakeholders (individuals or groups that should be part of the conversation on this topic or issue, or who have the power to effect change related to the inequality). For each stakeholder, provides at least 2 sentences in which they clearly explain why the individuals or groups selected should be considered stakeholders (how they took an action that had an impact on the problem, or what power they have to make something happen related to the problem, or how they are affected by the problem)

Your timeline will go here.  For creating your timeline, ask yourself, what are some of the key events or developments that contributed to or shaped the problem or issue?  How did the developments contribute to the problem or issue?

Add any context for your timeline here. You should provide at least 2 paragraphs in which you clearly provide basic background or history related to the problem. Your timeline should include six relevant events or developments that contributed to or are related to the problem. You should clearly explain how these events or developments impacted or contributed to the problem.

Explain why this is a social justice issue. You should provide at least two paragraphs in which you identify the social justice implications of this issue. You should incorporate the definitions of social justice discussed in the course as part of this explanation.

Explain how this is connected to citizenship. How does this problem or issue affect one’s ability to act as a (global, digital) citizen? 

You should provide at least two paragraphs in which you identify the citizenship implications of this issue. You should incorporate the definitions of citizenship discussed in the course as part of this explanation

Facilitating Conversations

Consider how you would engage other in a dialogue on this topic. How would you engage someone who perhaps has an opposing view on this? How would you engage a key stakeholder on this issue?

How do you engage with someone who has been impacted on this topic? How do I listen to someone who has been impacted by this issue? How might you need to change your approach for your different stakeholders?

Provide short, medium, and large actions that you can take to mitigate this problem.

Advocacy

What are some examples of how you could advocate for change on this issue? Related to the elevator speech assignment. How do you make people care about your issue? How do you connect this to making change as an active and informed citizen?  

Resources and Discussion Questions

What are some resources that others can use to learn more about the issue?  What are some relevant discussion questions?

Provide 4-5 recommended readings (or videos) that your audience can use to learn more about the topic. The recommendations should be relevant to the topic or issue and are at an appropriate level for the intended audience. 

You should also provide 3-4 discussion questions that are intended to encourage the audience to critically reflect on or engage with the topic or issue.
