Artistic Data Visualization
Artistic Data Visualization: Beyond Visual Analytics
=========
Using data from Google Earth (map) to demonstrate the differences between scientific, journalistic, and artistic visualizations:
Scientific: There are many science labs and scientific journal papers that use Google Earth as a tool for scientific research and discovery. Such as this one. There are also scientific vis examples targeted for the general public. An example would be How NASA uses Google Earth to illuminate the invisible.
Artistic: Basically, it’s when artists using data as a medium or tool to create visual expressions. Aesthetics is more important than conveying information. And the purpose of art is to ask questions rather than to identify answers (unlike scientific or sometimes journalistic). Some artistic vis examples using Google Earth:
Digital Detritus by Peter Root
Journalistic: Vis projects produced by NYTimes’, Economics, The Guardian… all the major news media outlets. It’s investigative, often narrative-based, and the goal is to report facts to the general public. Example: Life in the camps by Reuters
