Last Wednesday, the Chilean Constitutional Convention agreed to call Chile a “plurinational” state from here on out. This is being done in efforts to include the indigenous population in the country’s decision-making, and overall help them to be more included in the government. A very good majority of Chile’s population is indigenous, and they have often faced prejudices in the country. The new constitution quotes that indigenous people will have the “right to the full exercise of their collective and individual rights,” which will certainly be something new for them.
The government, according to the new bylaws of the constitution, will recognize the cultures and ways of life of the indigenous population. It will allow these peoples to follow their cultures, some of which have been around for thousands of years. There were 115 votes in favor of recognizing Chile as a plurinational state, as well as 34 against, and 4 abstentions. The revised constitution should be available by the end of June.
The direct information in this article comes straight from the new constitutional changes. Almost all of the direct quotes are right out of the new constitution. MercoPress, the news source, is a South American based company. However, they are centered in Montevideo, Uruguay, which is close to Chile, but still a few countries over nonetheless. The author does not confirm nor deny their support of the happenings, but rather notes them in a straightforward, to-the-point manner.
