Japan has one of the world’s most interesting education systems and cultures with portrayals of the rich collective school life. Kids are trained to be independent starting at the age of 6 because of the busy adult working culture there leaving many young adolescents needing to look out for themselves. It is a high-stress environment that causes some students to commit suicide because the system is entirely focused on passing exams through brutal memorization. Starting lower secondary school (7th, 8th, and 9th grade), students are required to pass a certain examination in order to progress onto the next stage of their education whereas institutions in the west only require local registration unless it’s a private school.
I chose the Bar graph because it is the clearest when demonstrating numbers while making comparisons between different categories. This graph shows how Japan’s entrance exam system prevents some students from furthering their education with the significant decrease in the number of institutions as one tries to progress. Elementary has the highest number of institutions then the numbers begin to shrink by almost half every 3-4 years.
