4 Country Report: Wikipedia

Lina Belouadah

This is the home page of Algeria’s Wikipedia page. The page in English was created in the Fall of 2001 and, since 2015, has had over 600 billion page views. It averages over 250 million views daily and 43 million of those views come from registered active users with the ability to edit. Since 2015, the page has had over one billion edits and about 1,000 confirmed admins that moderate and protect the page from inaccurate edit revisions. In the past 12 months, the page has been edited 525 times, with edits being made by people of Wikipedia’s top 10% editors.

The page can be translated into nine key languages excluding English, but with a total of 257 languages with information on Algeria. The information many of the pages covered were the geographic location of Algeria, information about indigenous groups, a brief history of origins of the country leading into colonization, languages spoken, religions practiced, and economic state of the country. Of the nine key languages, I noticed they were all related to regions or countries that had diplomatic relations to Algeria and upon clicking into each language, found that countries with stronger ties to Algeria had more in-depth information on their coordinating language’s Algerian Wikipedia page. When researching, I found that Arabic, French, and English were some of the longest pages on the site, and authors with backgrounds in these languages had clearly invested more research into the Algerian Wikipedia page overall. Wikipedia Algeria in Korean talked more about the country’s relations with the Korea Republic, whereas Wikipedia Algeria in Spanish talked more about Algerian history prior to European colonization in relation to the Spanish Inquisition that happened in modern-day Spain and Portugal. I think each page covers the basic information about Algeria but with more in-depth information leaning towards each country’s interest specifically.
