112 Country Report: Data Visualization

For my data visualization, I created two different charts. The overall topic which I explored for Jamaica was the intentional homicide rate in Jamaica. This was measured by the rate per 100,000 people. I was curious to explore this because of the fact that gun violence and violence overall in Jamaica are incredibly prevalent. My first global news post even relates to that as it was about the BLM movement’s impact in Jamaica and the amount of violence and blame on people living in poverty or specific areas for their deaths because they are known to be violent areas. That is why I was interested in this to see the connection between my previous research through that article to this data visualization project. I was able to find data from 1990-2020 as the most current date with data. I chose a bar chart for this because I found that it was easy to see the specific differences very clearly from year to year and if the rates went up or not.
Just for my own curiosity, I was interested in exploring if there was a difference between genders regarding the international homicide rate in Jamaica. I was able to find data for this for the years 2005-2020. I used a line graph because it could best capture the comparison between the total and the differences in rates between the male and female rates and the trend for all of it over time easily compared. I was not sure what to expect but was surprised by the massive difference between rates between males and females it would be interesting to explore reasons why there is such a large disparity and what factors lead to that in the future.
