Akhannouch Ranks 14th Richest Man in Africa Amid Morocco’s Economic Crisis

This article addresses backlash being received by Aziz Akhannouch, a famous businessman turned politician. Akhannouch’s recent listing in a Forbes ranking of the wealthiest people in Africa sparked criticism. Akahhaouch, number 14 on the list with a net worth of approximately 1.5 billion, serves as the current Head of Government (Prime Minister) and holds majority of stock for Akwa Group, a multibillion dollar conglomerate, as well as owning several companies in the energy sector.. Backlash against Akhannouch comes as millions of low-income Moroccan families struggle to afford food and fuel. This economic crisis is causing the purchasing power or impacted Moroccans to plummet, something that Akhannouch, Moroccans argue, should be putting more effort into helping with via legislation. Criticisms come from everyday Moroccans and politicians alike as they claim Akhannouch has a “conflict of interests”.

The article utilizes information from the referenced Forbes list, as well as quotes from another politician that agree that Akhannouch may indeed have a conflict of interest due to his business endeavors outside of government. As food and fuel prices in Morocco continue to increase, many highlight the government’s inability to protect the purchasing power of Moroccans, especially low-income families. The article also cites other articles that highlight controversies regarding Akhannouch.
