Saudi Arabia frees US citizen imprisoned over tweets

US citizen imprisoned in Saudi Arabia over tweets - ABC News

The article talks about the release of 72-year-old Saad Ibrahim Almadi after his imprisonment of certain tweets he had posted where he spoke badly about the Crown Prince and addressed Khashoggi, who was a US journalist killed in the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Istanbul in 2018. Saad Ibrahim is a dual citizen, having citizenship from Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Saad Ibrahim Almadi had gone to Saudi Arabia in 2021 to visit his family when he was stopped by government officials and was shown the tweets that he had shared. Almadi had been serving his 19-year sentence for his tweets when he was finally released in 2023. His son, Ibrahim Almadi, had accused the U.S. government of not declaring his father as wrongfully detained because the U.S. had been working on relations with Saudi Arabia for cheaper oil.

The article was published in The Columbus Dispatch which is a non-biased newspaper. It was written by Ellen Knickmeyer, who received her Master’s in Public Administration at Harvard University. Most of her articles focus on her research in the Middle East and the impact of U.S. foreign policies and finances. I found the article to be very well written and it didn’t include many potential biases from the newspaper or author.
