Milan stops recognising children born to same-sex couples

Milan, Italy has stopped recognizing children born to same-sex couples who obtained foreign birth cirtificates. In an article published to The Local Italy, Elaine Allaby discusses the reasons why the local government is making this change. The move follows a decision made by Italy’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, which ruled that foreign birth certificates issued to same-sex parents were not valid for Italian citizenship. As a result of this, children born to same-sex couples who obtained foreign birth certificates will not be registered by Milan’s civil registration offices, which prevents them from obtaining Italian citizenship and certain rights like education and healthcare. While the intention was not to target same-sex couples, the decision is being highly criticized by LGBTQ+ rights groups. They argue that this ruling violates the rights of the children to be recognized as Italian citizens as well as a disadvantage in obtaining basic Italian rights.
