This article is all about the Black Lives Matter movement’s influence in Jamaica. The issue of lack of accountability and police brutality was something that very much struck a chord in a variety of countries, and Jamaica is not one that fell through the cracks after the killing of George Floyd, and the whole Black Lives Matter movement really ignited globally. This made Jamaicans really start to look in on the bias that is happening in their own country. Some evidence in the article includes the murder of women just a few days later in Jamaica, issues with the treatment of inmates in Jamaica, and the generally heightened emphasis on social issues through citizens’ actions. One example of police brutality within Jamaica occurred just two days after the murder of Geoge Floyed a woman named Susan Bogle was shot in her home in a community outside of Kingston who has intellectual disabilities and who lived in poverty The fact that people felt like the issue in it of itself was where she lived and not the fact that she was killed necessarily is a huge example of showing the issues happening in Jamaica with justice. In addition, there was an inmate Noel Chambers, who died in prison after waiting 41 years for a trial and never getting one. It was noted that he died in horrible conditions with many signs of neglect, which is a complete disgrace to how the justice and court system should work. The overall desire to combat these issues was supported by the fact that huge protests erupted in Jamaica because of these killings and deaths, in addition to others. There was backlash over an editorial cartoon that portrayed protestors negatively. Overall this shows how issues in one country can spark attention in others today and how powerful information on the internet can be globally.
