Internet Penetration Rates for China from 2008-2022

The main source that I used was from Statista. This source had China’s internet penetration rates in % from 2008-2022. As I have became very interested in internet access around the world, I decided to look at that for my visualization on China. I also used some information from a data reporting website called DataReportal. This source had some very up to date statistics on China’s population and internet usage all in one. They broke down China’s population demographics and their internet usage all the way down to social media.
Why I Chose this Method

I chose this method because I believe that a bar graph is one of the easiest types of visual data for anyone to comprehend. I used Excel to make this bar graph. I think it is particularly useful in this case because when you just look at the numbers you see that China has slightly over 1 billion people with internet access. In addition, the graph shows a continuous increase in the number of people in China who have access to the internet. However, when you realize the population in China is just over 1.4 billion people, that leaves over 400 million people without internet. This means that in China alone, more people don’t have access to the internet than the entire population of the United States. It is important to use visualizations to bring these numbers to life because each country is very different from the next. You can’t just look at numbers about a certain country or topic and get the whole picture. Graphs really help you to understand the bigger significance of certain numbers. I think the bar graph does a really good job here of showing how China still has a long way to go in terms of internet penetration.
