5 Country Report: Data Visualization

I chose this visualization method because I think it embodies a lot of what Argentina has been experiencing the last several years. When someone thinks of Argentina currently, one of the biggest things that comes to mind is its massive inflation rate, which has continued to increase year after year at an incredible rate. The line graph itself was important, because it shows the change over time of how it continues to increase and the comparison from year to year. The choice to add the United States in the graph, I felt, demonstrated this even more. A lot of the political rhetoric in the United States for the last year has centered around how awful inflation is, and how inflation can be seen in everything from gas prices to the price of a cereal box. The comparison with Argentina, where even the U.S.’s worst inflation rates of the past year do not hold a candle to Argentina’s over the last decade, really puts the situation in perspective and how much the prices of ordinary goods have increased there. In order to even show the scale of inflation in Argentina, the scale makes it appear as if the United States’s inflation rate is zero almost every year.
The lack of data for Argentina in 2015 is something I couldn’t put my finger on. No matter which source I tried to look at, I could not find any inflation rate for 2015 with seemingly no explanation–I entered the data as null, which is why there is a seemingly large drop that doesn’t actually exist and is simply unaccounted for data. The data for both countries came via Statista, with the IMF as the basic source.
