211 Country Report: Data Visualization

Perhaps the most prominent issue in Taiwanese politics is that of identity. Some people identify as Taiwanese, others as Chinese, and some as both. The issue of national identity runs deep into history and is much more complex than the numbers on the surface, but polls and surveys conducted frequently help to track changes in the political landscape. The data was originally visualized using a line chart, which is excellent for showing the changes over time using three separate lines, one for each poll response. I have chosen to slightly reconfigure the visualization of the data by using a bar chart, which emphasizes proportions of a whole, giving a snapshot of the political landscape in each year over time. In general, the amount of people identifying as strictly Taiwanese has increased significantly. This goes hand-in-hand with the rising popularity of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party and anti-China sentiment over the past few decades.
