On January 5, violence erupted following the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of drug lord Joaquin “el Chapo Guzmán,” in the city of Culiacán, in the state of Sinaloa. The residents of Culiacan posted videos of armed men riding in convoys in trucks and SUVs around the streets on social media. At least one of them had an open vehicle with a rifle on the back. The city’s entrances were all closed. Local officials issued a warning that said, “Don’t leave home! The most crucial factor is Culiacán’s residents’ safety. Numerous private companies, local government offices, and educational institutions remained closed.

Ovidio Guzmán, along with his brothers Iván Archivaldo and Jesus Alfredo, is regarded as a top target for US prosecutors. They are said to be one of the principal importers of fentanyl into that nation, whose usage has resulted in more than 100,000 yearly overdose fatalities among Americans. The Federal Court of the District of Columbia in Washington issued a provisional arrest order for Ovidio for the purpose of extradition on July 6, 2018 for trafficking cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana.
