The author is Minlu Zhang who is a linguist that focuses on language documentation for the China Daily News. She has been writing for them for over 2 years now.
The main premise of the article is to show how popular Chinese language and culture continue to become in the United States. To do this the article gives the perspective of several different people in the United States that are learning Chinese and have gotten good at it. In addition to the first-person perspectives, the articles gives stats and figures to show how “Chinese Fever” is rapidly spreading. The article says that over 400,000 students in the United States are now learning Chinese, and that more than 200,000 schools and kindergartens have Chinese programs in place.
On a more analytical level I found this article to be really interesting and important. I think the first-person perspectives presented here showcase how important it is to know someone’s language and culture if you really want to connect with them. The various people who are highlighted in the article show that when you take the time to learn and appreciate the language and culture of other places, those people will have a greater appreciation of you as well. With China always in the news and being one of the prominent economic powers in the world now, I think this article did a great job of showing the benefits of learning Chinese.
