Cameroon: solutions to reduce the cost of medical care

This article talks about everyone is looking to have a better health care system, in order to help the government finance healthcare, improve access to health services and to promote universal health coverage. The article then goes into more depth about what’s been going on in Cameroon’s health care system and why they want to improve ( not just for the government’s sake) but also for the Cameroonians that don’t even incorporate or think about health insurance at all.

Although Cameroon has several health insurance schemes, the article states that only 36.1% have access to health centres. They bring in a healthcare specialist and trainer of rural doctors, named Dr Sangwe Clovis Nchinjoh and he says,” In Cameroon, only 7% of the population has health insurance..” He then goes on to say that Health insurance is a topic that’s not talked about in Cameroon; that people don’t have enough means or money to afford health insurance because they need to think about food.

The article says that Dr. Sangwe proposes that “the government can start implementing this system on children or pregnant women and gradually extend it to the rest of the population.” I believe it’s a lot easier said than done, but also that most Cameroonians, young and old have not been told about healthcare insurance and the benefits that come with it. That’s why there’s a high spike in poor health because most people don’t know or have access to health care services. Only 36% of the population has access to healthcare services, and most of them are in rural areas.
