Shane Phelan’s article “Bank of Ireland accused of supplying women’s data to ‘stalker’ father”, portrays how a breach of information can affect families’ and companies’ reputations. In this case, a bank gave a woman’s confidential information to her father, who used it to track down his daughter and harass her. The woman had an abusive relationship with her mother and father and therefore moved to Spain with her partner, where her father continued to harass them. The father could do this by accessing the woman’s banking transactions. According to an internal investigation by the bank, the information could have only been printed off at one of two locations. Still, it was not possible to determine who had printed the report.

The woman and her partner filed a lawsuit claiming the bank unlawfully disclosed her personal data and facilitated unlawful surveillance, tracing, staking, and harassment. The bank never admitted that it leaked personal data. The article references the lawsuit frequently to help describe the legalities of the issue. Phelan also mentions statements made during the proceedings of the court case. In fact, this case went all the way up to the High Court of Ireland on the circumstances of the bank settling the case without an admission of liability. The woman and her partner oppose this idea. The bank stated that the claim was closed and only investigated a year later because the woman had confirmed there was a breach of data through the Data Protection Commissioner. Overall, the article was well organized. Phelan included a lot of information to back up the claims made by both the woman and the bank through statements made in court and references to the lawsuit.
