As war continues in Ethiopia between the Amhara and Tigray regions, this article shares an update about the Ethiopian minorities who have been struggling with displacement since the beginning of the war in November of 2020. The Ethiopian government has allowed their Eritrean neighbors to help attack the Tigray regions that lay on the border of the two countries. Because of this, many ethnolinguistic minority groups, within the Tigray region, including the Kunama, Irob, Qemant, and Agew peoples have been forced out of their homes by the Eritrean and Amhara regional allies.
Two members of the Irob community, Aida and Fissha, have shared that both of their homes were robbed by an Amhara region military and were told they had one week to leave Ethiopia or else they would be killed. These two women decided to leave Ethiopia in 2020, and although there was a peace deal signed between the two regions in November of 2022, their homes are still occupied by Eritreans. With references to individual experiences and other organizations within Ethiopia, this allows for a deeper understanding of the war. The war has also brought back prejudice against cultures and political beliefs in Amhara regions. Many people have stopped identifying as Ethiopian and switched to only identify as their ethnolinguistic minority groups. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has been working to keep its people safe, however there are still many conflicts occurring that have left many natives displaced and fearful for the future.
