224 Country Report: Wikipedia

Alanna Strickland

According to Wikimedia Statistics, page views on Wikipedia are about one million page views in the month of January, so if we use this number for the full year, then we can say page views are about 12 million a year. If we look at Togo’s population of 8.08 million (about half the population of New York) people in 2019, only 1/8 of the population is using Wikipedia. There are many factors that can play into why this is, but I think the biggest one would be accessibility to the internet. The country only has 10 editors from the region and so I do not think that it is a valuable information source for Togolese people. There could be Togolese people from around the world who are contributing to the editing for this country but with the statistics that we have, it does not seem like we could find that information out.

Information about Togo is better than I thought it would be on Wikipedia, there is a stark difference in the French Wikipedia and the English Wikipedia though. I think the biggest differences would be statistics and sources. A respectable number of sources are not the same and statistics are starkly different in some areas. But they both touch heavily on Togolese economy and their government and its history. Most of the editors for the English page seem to be from America, I do not know if any of them identify as Togolese though. In the French Wikipedia, majority of the editors are from France, and I cannot determine if those from France have Togolese ancestry.
