Figure 3: dog, skin; There are low numbers of melanocytes scattered within the stratum basale.  Melanocytes are identified as "clear cells", with non-staining cytoplasm.  Even though melanocytes generate pigment, much of this is transferred to keratinocytes, which ultimately contain the highest amount of melanin.
