I see that there is a lot of laundry drying in the alleyway, does that mean most homes in Istanbul do not have a dryer? Is this to save space, energy, or to protect the quality of clothing?

Unfortunately, dryer is a little expensive for an average Turkish family. For my family too. We usually drying our laundries that way.

    Hi Natalie,
You can see this table in the old corners of Istanbul. I guess, it’s just about money. They might say “our culture” but we must ask again to Istanbul women’s for the most accurate information. 🙂

      Hello Ali,

When you say that we should Istanbul women for the most accurate information on this topic, are you implying that they are the ones that do the laundry in the household? Or do both women and men do the laundry?

I guess that is something I wonder about. In a household, who is the one that normally does the laundry? I ask because I only see women in the pictures above.

My mom sometimes hangs laundry to dry inside in our basement. I was wondering, do clothes ever go missing from hanging up outside? Does the wind ever blow them away or do clothes/items ever get stolen?

I like that you are trying to get an understanding of how people in both cities address one of life’s most basic needs: clean clothing!

The conversation has come to the point where personal experience will differ quite a bit. I encourage you to follow up about this on Carmen, or when we have our video conference.
