Chapter 7: Riley talks about when and why to cite
Citations are so important. But they can also be a little tricky. When are you supposed to cite? When can you get away with not citing?
I often times get confused when paraphrasing or summarizing because if I am paraphrasing, then that’s my own work. Right? The answer is actually no.
I’ve seen many people get tripped up in paraphrasing. But the reality is that you should always cite. It’s really common for people to unintentionally plagiarize because they are unaware of the rules of citation.
There are many reasons to cite, but the one that I have always considered most important is to avoid academic misconduct.
I wasn’t really aware of the of the other reasons for citing until reading this chapter. But they all make so much sense. By citing a source, you are simultaneously proving credibility and also advancing further research. You are also giving credit where credit is due.
I don’t know about you, but I know I would want to be credited if someone was using my work.
While citing can be tedious, it is so helpful to everyone in the research community.
